LC24-107A LITERACY IN THE CLASSROOM HOW TO TEACH DYSLEXICS AND STRUGGLING READERS THROUGH STRUCTURED LITERACY (SL) Final Session
Mary Moran has been working closely with struggling readers for almost four decades. She was trained in the Orton Gillingham structured literacy method in the eighties and has been teaching privately since, having, at a conservative estimate, taught over 1500 students at all school going ages. In 2022 she designed and wrote a unique structured literacy programme, i.e., the Dcode programme, which employs all the techniques and methods she uses with great success as a dyslexia tutor.
Participants who complete this course will be able to teach individuals, small groups and classes how to read through structured literacy. Furthermore, they will be competent in teaching children to spell through structure, adhering to spelling rules. They will also be able to fully engage with colleagues and contribute to designing and implementing whole school literacy strategies. Finally, and most importantly, they will be able to teach severely dyslexic children to read and spell.
This course covers the Primary Language Curriculum Learning Outcomes (LO) for the Reading (LO 3,4,5 & 6) and Writing strands (LO 3,4 & 5).
This is a five week course with sessions taking place on Monday October 7th; Thursday October 17th; Monday October 21st; Thursday November 14th and Thursday November 21st 7p.m.-8.30p.m. in Athlone Education Support Centre.
