LC23-123A Dyslexia Community of Practice for Post Primary Teachers Session 3: Study Skills
Dyslexia and Reading
Learners with dyslexia may struggle with several aspects of reading and it can be a key difficulty at second level. Some students may have to decode the words they are reading and as a result cannot remember the content of what they have read. Others may read slowly and have to reread several times, while some may misread words when tired or stressed. They may lack the vocabulary to recognise the words in a text. Some, while reading every word on the page, may lack comprehension of its content. Some dread reading aloud as it makes their difficulties more pronounced.
This presentation aims to
- Outline the different ways reading causes difficulties to the student with dyslexia
- Look at ways to pinpoint what a student’s key reading difficulty might be.
- Outlines a Dyslexia Friendly style for written materials.
- Suggests possible practical strategies to help with the development of reading skills.
